Historical evidence can be used to claim routes that have not yet been recorded on the Definitive Map of Rights of Way. Our DLYW section describes the background to this and the work we do to verify and register unrecorded paths. There was originally a deadline of 1 January 2026, later postponed to 2031, for making these historic claims. The government recently said it will remove the deadline altogether, but our work continues to record historic paths.
